Beyond the Skin: Your Nervous System Is Part of Your Skin Health

Over the years of working closely with women and their skin, I have become increasingly curious about what is happening beyond what I can see on the surface.

A woman may arrive concerned about dryness, sensitivity, inflammation, breakouts or changes in her skin. Of course, I look at what products she is using and what her skin may need—but I also notice the rest of her.

Is her jaw clenched?

Are her shoulders holding tension?

Is her breathing shallow?

Has she been carrying too much for too long?

Because when a woman lies on my treatment bed, her skin isn’t the only thing I’m caring for.

The skin does not exist separately from the rest of you

We often treat the skin as though it is an isolated surface—something to cleanse, exfoliate, correct or cover.

But your skin is part of your whole body.

It responds to your environment, your hormones, your overall health and the way your body experiences stress. Research into the brain–skin connection has found that psychological stress can affect inflammation, skin-barrier function, itching and the skin’s ability to recover. This does not mean every skin concern is caused by stress. It means there may be more happening beneath the surface than we have traditionally considered. Research into stress and skin health

When I first began Daysdream and created the Goddess Facial, I understood this intuitively—even if I did not yet have all the language or science to explain it.

Something within me knew that a facial could care for more than a woman’s skin so I combined Reiki with the facial, allowing the treatment to support the woman as a whole—her skin, her body and her energy.

Over time, as I continued adding Shiatsu, facial acupressure and other elements of my training, I began to understand more deeply what my intuition had known from the beginning:

A woman’s skin does not exist separately from the rest of her.

Sometimes what the skin needs is a carefully chosen product or treatment. Sometimes the woman beneath the skin also needs a place where she does not have to hold everything together.

What I notice on the treatment bed

There is often a moment during a Goddess Facial when I feel a woman’s body begin to soften.

Her breathing becomes slower.

Her shoulders release into the bed.

Her jaw lets go.

The room becomes quieter—not because there was anything wrong when she arrived, but because her body has been given permission to pause.

I cannot promise that relaxation will completely change a particular skin condition but I do believe that creating the conditions for rest matters.

Science is also becoming increasingly interested in this connection. Evidence suggests psychological stress can interfere with the skin barrier—the protective layer that helps retain moisture and defend the skin from irritants. Evidence review on stress and the skin barrier

When your body begins to soften, your skin may benefit too.

Why my Goddess Facials include more than skincare

Every Goddess Facial is different because every woman who arrives on my treatment bed is different.

Yes, I begin by looking closely at your skin and choosing what will best support it. But the treatment may also include facial acupressure, Shiatsu, Reiki, energy work or simply more time spent in an area where I sense your body is holding tension.

I am not following the same sequence and repeating the same facial on every person.

I am listening.

I am paying attention to your skin, but I am also noticing your breath, your body and how you respond to touch. I am allowing the treatment to unfold according to what you may need that day.

This is not about trying to force your body into relaxation or making your skin another problem to solve.

It is an invitation to receive.

What if your skin is communicating with you?

When something changes in our skin, it is natural to want it gone. We may immediately begin searching for a new product, a stronger treatment or the thing we have done wrong.

I understand that response. When something in our body feels uncomfortable or unfamiliar, we want an answer.

But I wonder what might change if we became curious before we began fighting it.

What has been happening in my life lately?

Have I been resting?

Have I been feeling overwhelmed?

Has my body been asking me to slow down?

What might my skin need from me right now?

These questions are not meant to create blame. Your skin concern is not your fault, and you do not need to become perfectly calm to deserve healthy skin.

They are simply another way of listening.

Caring for the woman beneath the skin

To me, skincare is not only about improving what we see in the mirror.

It can also be a ritual of returning to yourself.

A facial can be a place where you are cared for without needing to perform, explain or look after anyone else. It can be a moment when your body is allowed to settle and you are reminded that receiving care does not have to come with a cost or expectation.

That is the heart of my work at Daysdream.

I care about your skin.

But I also care about the woman beneath it.

Because your skin isn’t the only thing I’m caring for.

With love,
Dalyn
